Taiwan Set to Ship Nuclear Waste to NK

Taiwan is seeking to ship 60,000 barrels of nuclear waste to North Korea as soon as the North solves technical matters regarding how it will go about burying the waste, a diplomatic source here said yesterday.
타이완은 북한이 핵폐기물 매립과 관련된 기술적 문제를 해결하는 대로 6만 배럴 상당의 핵폐기물을 북한에 수송할 계획을 추진중이라고 외교 소식통이 어제 전했다.
"We haven't confirmed where in North Korea the shipment will be
stored yet, but the Hwanghae Province area, which has a number of *abandoned coal mines, seems to be the most likely choice," the source said. The area has been frequently mentioned by the western media as a possible site for the burial of North Korean nuclear waste.

Taiwan *virtually abandoned its plan to ship nuclear waste to North Korea years ago when South Korea put up strong resistance to the project, citing the danger of environmental *contamination and arguing that the North's storage facilities are insufficiently equipped to handle *radioactive materials.

However, the Taiwan Power Corp., which maintains a *contract with North Korea on the shipment of the nuclear waste, renewed the contract last year, the source said.

The renewed contract calls for Taiwan to pay $220 million to North Korea for its *acceptance of the shipment of 200,000 barrels of nuclear waste, he said.

Russia, whose parliament is still *deliberating on whether to allow the shipment.
