Red Cross Under Fire for Favoritism
대한적십자, 이산가족 상봉자 선정에 편파시비로 비난의 화살
The Red Cross yesterday decided to *allot 10 percent of the
100-member delegation of separated families to the family members of *prisoners-of-war, *abductees and those from separated family groups during the next inter- Korean family reunions.

대한 적십자사는 어제 다음 이산가족 상봉때는 상봉단 100명 가운데 10%를 전쟁포로와 납북자 가족에게 할당하기로 결정했다.
At the selection committee meeting at the Korea National Red Cross (KNRC) building yesterday, the members decided to give ``*preference'' to those groups.
* preferences : the favouring of people : 선호, 편애
어제 대한 적십자사 본사에서 열린 선정 위원회에서 위원들은 이들에게 "특혜"를 제공하기로 결정했다.
It is the first time that the families of POWs will be included in the list. The matter is considered politically sensitive, as North Korea has *insisted that there are no such war prisoners in its *realm. Seoul *estimates that some 400 POWs have been *detained in North Korea since the Korean War (1950-1953).

전쟁 포로 가족들이 상봉자 명단에 포함된 것은 이번이 처음 있는 일이다. 북측은 북한내에 국군 전쟁 포로가 없다고 주장하고 있기 때문에 정치적으로 민감하게 받아들여진다는 것이 문제이다. 정부는 한국전 이후로 약 400명 정도의 전쟁포로가 북한에 억류되어 있을 것으로 추정하고 있다.
``Pyongyang allowed the family of one abductee to unite at the Nov. 30- Dec. 2 reunion, so there should be no problem this time to allow the POWs' kin also,'' a source said.
"북한측은 지난 11월30일에서 12월 2일까지 열린 상봉 때 납북자 한사람의 가족 상봉을 허용해 주었기 때문에 이번 전쟁 포로 가족 상봉도 별 문제는 없을 것이다."라고 소식통은 전했다.
In the meanwhile, the Red Cross's decision to set aside a *significant percentage for the groups is expected to *trigger *violent protests from the separated families.

* violent : marked by extreme force or sudden intense activity : 격렬한
한편 납북자와 전쟁 포로들의 가족에 대해 상당한 비율을 책정한
적십자사의 결정은 이산가족들의 격렬한 항의를 불러일으킬 것으로
예상된다.
Presently, about 103,000 family members have *applied to the KNRC for the reunions and await their chance to meet their North Korean kin, but only some 200 have actually been able to go to Pyongyang for the reunions since last year.

현재 10만3000명 정도의 가족들이 대한 적십자사에 상봉 신청을 하고서 북의 가족을 만날 기회를 기다리고 있지만 실제로는 지난해부터 200명 만 평양에 가서 가족을 만날 수 있었다.
