The National Intelligence Service said yesterday that it would
continue to protect North Korean defector Hwang Jang-yop and his aide
Kim Dok-hong by *retaining the same ``special protection status'' they
have received since their defection in 1997.

국가정보원은 북한에서 월남한 황장엽씨와 그의 측근 김덕홍 씨에 대해 1997년 망명 이후 받아온 "특별 보호 상태"를 계속 유지함으로써 경호체제를 유지할 것이라고 어제 발표했다.
``Since they (Hwang and Kim) changed their minds, opting to stay
inside the safe house, we are willing to continue providing them with the service,'' said an official of the nation's top intelligence agency.
"그들은 안가에 머물 것을 원하면서 자신들의 견해를 바꾸었기 때문에 우리는 계속해서 그들을 보호하게 될 것이다."라고 국정원의 한 관계자는 말했다.
Hwang, a former secretary of the North Korean Workers' Party who
defected to Seoul in 1997, set off a *controversy by issuing a
statement on Nov. 20 claiming he was restricted from contacting
politicians and journalists by the NIS, due to his *staunch opposition of the North Korean regime.

1997년 남한으로 망명한 전 북한 노동당 비서였던 황장엽 씨는 지난 11월 20일 북한 정권에 대해 가지고 있는 자신의 철저한 반대입장 때문에 국정원으로부터 정치인 및 언론인들과의 접촉을 금지 당하고 있다는 내용의 성명서를 발표함으로써 논란을 일으켰다.
The NIS, apparently offended by Hwang's outright attack against the organization, *relieved him of the presidency of its research unit. Hwang also claimed he had been asked to leave the safe house where he has lived since defecting. NIS officials *disputed this, however, saying it was Hwang who demanded he be freed from the ``blockade from the outside world.''

갑작스런 황장엽 씨의 비난으로 타격을 입었음이 분명한 국정원은 연구소장의 직위에서 그를 해임했다. 황 씨는 또한 망명이후 계속 머물러온 안전가옥을 떠나라는 강요를 받아왔다고 주장했다. 그러나 국정원 관계자들은 "외부 세상으로부터 차단"된 상태에서 해방되기를 원한 사람은 황 씨 자신이라고 말하면서 이를 반박했다.
As a result, NIS officials were considering providing Hwang with
lower-level police *protection instead, as there is a danger that North Korea might launch a terrorist attack against him.

However, Hwang made it clear Sunday at a meeting with rightwing lawyer Oh Je-do that he wants to stay in a safe house.

가옥에서 계속 머물고 싶다는 의사를 분명히 밝혔다.

Committee, said yesterday, ``As the two want to continue to stay in the NIS safe house, I will hold discussions with NIS director Lim Dong-won to ensure their continued protection.''
김명섭 국회 정보위 위원장은 어제 "두 사람이 국정원의 안가에 계속
머물고 싶어하므로 나는 임동원 국정원장을 만나 계속해서 특별 관리를 받을 수 있도록 면담을 가지겠다."라고 말했다.
Hwang was present at the committee meeting yesterday, where he
expressed regrets over his situation being inaccurately *portrayed in the media.

황장엽 씨는 이날 정보위원회에 참석해서 언론에 오보된 자신의 상황에 대한 유감의 뜻을 밝혔다.
