Descriptions of 285 Korean Dishes Available in 6 Different Languages

Foreigners will be able to order food in local restaurants more easily *from now on, as Seoul City has completed a database program that *provides descriptions of various dishes in foreign languages.

서울 시청이 다양한 음식을 표현하는 외국어로 된 데이터베이스 프로그램을 완성함으로써, 앞으로 외국인들이 식당에서 음식을 주문하는 일이 더욱 쉬워질 것으로 보인다.
The program will offer descriptions of 285 different kinds of Korean and other dishes in six languages; Korean, English, Japanese, Chinese, French and Spanish.
이 프로그램은 285 종류의 한국 음식을 한국어, 영어, 일어, 중국어,
프랑스어, 스페인어 등 6개 언어로 표현하고 있다.
``We planned the program to offer better service to the increasing number of foreigners who will visit Korea for the `Visit Korea Year 2001' as well as the 2002 World Cup games,'' said a Seoul City official. It was developed by a university-based team, led by Professor Chang Nam-soo of the Department of Foods and *Nutrition at Ewha Womans University.

"우리는 2002 월드컵은 물론이고 2001 한국 방문의 해를 맞아 우리나라를 찾을 외국인들이 계속 늘 것으로 예상됨에 따라 이들에게 더 좋은 서비스를 제공하기 위해 이 프로그램을 계획했다."고 서울시의 한 관계자는 언급했다.
이 프로그램은 이화 여자 대학의 식품 영양학과 장남수 교수가 이끄는 대학팀에 의해 개발되었다.
The main *ingredients, characteristics, origin, amount of calories as well as photos of the dishes are included in the database, and will be *distributed to restaurants and related government ministries in form of CD- ROMs. Citizens can also view the material by visiting (www.metro.seoul.kr)

이 데이터 베이스에는 음식의 사진 뿐 아니라 주요 재료와 음식의 특성, 유래 및 칼로리 양까지도 포함되어 있으며 여러 음식점과 관련 정부 부처에 CD롬으로 배포될 예정이다. 일반 시민들도 www.metro.seoul.kr 싸이트로 들어가면 이 내용들을 볼 수 있다.
Seoul city is also planning to make booklets *containing information on 30 to 40 Korean traditional dishes that are popular with foreigners and distribute them to various *traditional restaurants.

서울시는 또한 외국인들에게 인기 있는 30 - 40여개의 한국 전통 음식에 관한 정보를 다루는 소책자를 만들어 각지의 전통 음식점에 나누어줄 계획이다.
``Owners of small restaurants were *reluctant to make *separate menus for foreigners, as they had to pay additional fees. But thanks to this new program, the tedious task of manufacturing menus in foreign languages will become much easier,'' said a Seoul City official.
