*Asbestos Found In Seoul Subway

Large amounts of asbestos, a cancer causing fire resistant substance, were *detected in Seoul's subway stations, raising fears of a public health *hazard.

The Seoul branch of the Korean Federation for Environmental
Movement (*KFEM) said yesterday that alarming amounts of asbestos were found in two subway stations currently undergoing construction in Seoul. The environmental group had tested the asbestos *density at three subway stations in Seoul-- Chungmuro, Seoul City Hall, and Kangnam station-- from late February to March.

진행중인 서울 지하철역 두 곳에서 발견되었다고 발표했다. 이 환경 단체는 2월말부터 3월까지 충무로, 시청, 강남역 세 지하철역의 석면 밀도를 검사하였다.
According to the test results, a *ventilation room in Seoul City Hall subway station, on lines No. 1 and 2, was discovered to contain 0.026 parts of asbestos per one cubic centimeter, 2.6 times more than the U.S. standards of 0.01 asbestos/cc. Korea currently has no specific environmental standards regarding the substance.
