Individual Bankruptcy Cases Surge Amid Economic Slump

경기 침체 속에 개인 파산자 급증
A growing number of people have filed for individual bankruptcy in the first three months of this year as they could not meet debt *obligations amid the deepening economic *downturn.

올 들어 석 달 동안 계속 경기 침체가 심화되고 있는 가운데 채무를 이행할 수 없어 법원에 개인 파산을 신청한 사람들의 수가 늘고 있다.
The Seoul District Court yesterday reported that cases of bankruptcy continued a three-month spiral in March, when 35 people sought court *protection from debt obligations, a sharp rise from 18 in February and 13 in January.

서울 지방 법원은 어제 채무 변제 의무로부터 법원의 보호를 신청한 사람이 1월에는 13명, 2월에는 18명, 3월에는 35명으로 석 달 연속 계속 증가하고 있다고 발표했다.
The three-month figure soared by 175 percent to 66 cases from the 24 of the same period of last year.
지난 석 달간의 수치는 지난해 같은 기간동안의 24명에서 66명으로 늘어나 175%나 증가한 것이다.
According to the court, the number of individual bankruptcy *petitions once declined to three in December from 14 in November.

법원에 따르면 개인 파산자 신청은 지난 11월 14명에서 12월에는 3명으로 한때 하락세를 보였다고 한다.
A legal expert said this year's jump in the bankruptcy cases was due to the rapidly worsening economic slump.
한 법률 전문가는 급속한 경기 악화 때문에 올 들어 개인 파산건수가
증가한 것이라고 언급했다.
He said those filing for individual bankruptcy were found to have been unable to pay back credit card loans carrying high rates of interest.
개인 파산을 신청한 사람들은 높은 이자율 때문에 신용카드 대출을
상환하지 못한 사람들이 대부분이라고 그는 언급했다.
