67 Southerners Allowed to Write Letters to NK Kin
67명의 남한인, 북한 친척에게 편지 보낸다
Sixty-seven South Koreans will be allowed to send letters to their North Korean *relatives on March 15 via an official inter-Korean channel for the first time in the history of the half century-long national division.

반세기만에 처음으로 북에 있는 친지들에게 편지를 쓸 수 있을 것으로 보인다.
The Korea National Red Cross said it received the list of the North Koreans and their present addresses from the North Korean Red Cross Society Monday.
대한 적십자사는 월요일 북한 적십자사로부터 북한 동포들의 명단과 현 주소를 전해받았다고 언급했다.
Although a total of 100 South Koreans filed *applications via the Red Cross channel, North Korea failed to *trace down the kin of 14 South Koreans, while 19 of the South Korean applicants have no surviving kin.

적십자를 통해 총 100명의 남한 가족들이 신청서를 제출했으나 14명의 가족들은 행방을 찾지 못했으며 신청자 가운데 19명은 생존해 있는 가족이 없는 것으로 밝혀졌다.
During the search, the North Korean Red Cross Society *secured
information on 375 North Korean relatives of South Koreans. Of
them, 222 were already *deceased.

행방을 조사하던 중 북한 적십자사는 남한 가족이 찾는 375명의 북한
친지들에 관한 정보를 확보했는데 그 가운데 222명은 이미 사망한 후였다.
It failed to determine the *fates of 129 North Koreans.

The eldest among the South Korean applicants, Ho On-nyon, a
106-year-old resident of Kyonggi Province, *confirmed her son Yun Chang-sop, 70, to be alive in North Korea.

남쪽 신청자 가운데 가장 연장자는 경기도에 사는 106세의 허언년
할머니로서 아들 윤창섭(70세) 씨가 북에 생존해 있음을 확인했다.
Kang Jong-il, 56, the youngest applicant, also found that his sister Myong- suk, 60, is alive.
최연소 신청자인 강정일(56세) 씨도 누나 명숙(60) 씨가 살아있는 사실을 확인했다.
In contrast, South Korean authorities did a significantly better job in tracking down the relatives of North Korean applicants. Seoul found 656 kin of all but one of the 100 North Koreans.
북측과 대조적으로 우리측 당국은 북한 신청자들의 가족들의 행방을 찾는데 상당히 나은 성과를 거두었다. 정부는 북한 동포 100명이 찾는 가족 가운데 한 사람만을 제외하고 656명을 모두 찾아냈다.
One reason for such differences in the numbers lies in the North's lack of a computerized database of its population.
숫자면에서 이렇게 차이가 나는 이유는 북한이 전산화된 인구 데이터
베이스를 갖고 있지 못한 데 있다.
In the meantime, South and North Korea continued their talks
yesterday, seeking to reach an agreement on the *venues for
permanent meeting points for separated families.

한편, 남북은 어제 계속해서 회담을 진행하면서 이산가족들을 위한 상설 만남의 장소에 관한 합의를 이루려 노력했다.
South Korean delegates are to return to Seoul today after the
three-day talks.
남측 대표단은 3일간의 회담을 마치고 오늘 서울로 돌아올 예정이다.
The negotiators devoted themselves to selecting meeting points for separated families, which would facilitate family reunions.
협상 대표들은 이산 가족들의 가족 상봉을 보다 수월하게 하기 위해서 만남의 장소를 선정하는데 최선을 다하는 모습이었다.
