Protesting Daewoo Unionists Clash Violently With Police

Battles between unionized workers of Daewoo Motor and police
continued to *erupt as the workers staged sit-ins at their Pupyong plant for a third *consecutive day yesterday to protest the 1,750 job cuts by the carmaker.

대우 노조원들이 1750명에 대한 회사측의 정리 해고에 항의하면서
어제까지 사흘째 계속 부평 공장에서 연좌 농성을 벌임으로써 이들과
경찰의 충돌이 계속해서 발생하고 있다.
About 800 unionized workers and their families *occupied the plant, located west of Seoul, demanding that Daewoo Motor *cancel the massive *layoffs.

조합원들과 그 가족 800명은 서울 서쪽에 위치한 대우자동차 공장 부지를 점거하고 회사측에 대규모 해고를 철회하라고 요구하고 있다.
The angry workers have been holding sit-in protests since Saturday, after Daewoo Motor sent out *dismissal notices to 1,750 assembly line workers on Friday afternoon.

회사측이 지난 금요일 오후 조립 라인 근로자 1750명에 대한 해고
통지서를 발송한 이후 분노한 근로자들은 토요일부터 계속 연좌농성을 벌이고 있다.
Hundreds of autoworkers and their families repeatedly clashed with *riot police when they attempted to enter the factory compound to join in the rallies.

대우 자동차 근로자와 그 가족 수백명은 시위에 동참하기 위해 공장으로 진입하려다 이를 저지하려는 전경들과 계속 충돌을 일으켰다.
More than 2,000 riot police were *stationed all around the plant
yesterday to *cordon off the entrance of the factory.

어제 2000명 이상의 전경들이 공장 주위에 배치돼 공장 출입구를
에워쌌다.
The protesting workers inside the compound, on the other hand,
barricaded the gates of the factory with containers and office
supplies to block a potential police 8raid.

한편 공장내에서 항의를 벌이고 있는 근로자들은 경찰의 침투 가능성에 대비해 컨테이너와 사무 용품들로 공장 출입문에 바리케이드를 쳤다.
Violent *collisions erupted when the 800 workers and family
members protesting inside the factory clashed with riot police at around 10: 20 a.m., demanding the entrance of their families and co-workers into the compound.

오전 10시 20분경 공장내에서 항의중이던 근로자와 가족 800명이 동료 근로자들과 그 가족들의 공장 진입 허용을 요구하면서 전경들과
부딪침으로써 격렬한 충돌이 일어났다.
Workers and police struggled with steel pipes, clubs, and stones, causing serious and light injuries. Some angry union members threw small steel barricades and sprayed water at the riot police.
대우 근로자들과 경찰은 쇠파이프와 곤봉, 돌등으로 맞부딪쳐 중경상을 입은 사람들도 생겨났다. 격분한 일부 노조원들은 바리케이드로 쳐놓은 쇠조각을 던지고 전경을 향해 물을 분사하기도 했다.
