1 Out of 10 Elementary Students Smoke
초등생 10명중 1명이 흡연
One out of 10 elementary school students were found to have
smoked cigarettes, and among them, six out of 10 were *habitual
smokers, a recent survey showed.

According to a survey of 3,098 elementary students by the Ministry of Health and *Welfare, 10.2 percent, or 317 replied they had experienced smoking, while 6.3 percent or 195 students said they are still *continuing to do so. The survey was conducted among students between fourth and six grades from 25 Seoul-based elementary schools in late 1999.

보건복지부가 3098명의 초등학생들을 대상으로 조사한 결과에 따르면 10.2% 즉 317명이 흡연을 경험한 적이 있으며 6.3% 즉 195명은 계속해서 담배를 피우고 있다고 응답했다. 이 조사는 1999년 말 서울 지역의 25개 초등학교에서 4학년부터 6학년을 대상으로 실시되었다.
More than half were found to have first experienced smoking before the age of ten, calling for the *urgent need to educate young children of the harms of smoking. A total of 23.5 percent first started smoking in fourth grade, followed by third grade with 18.4 percent, first grade with 17.5 percent, second grade with 15.2 percent, fifth grade with 13.4 percent and sixth grade with 12 percent.

절반 이상이 10세 전에 처음으로 흡연을 경험했다고 답해, 흡연의 해로움에 관한 어린이 교육이 시급히 요청되고 있다. 23.5%가 4학년때 처음 흡연을 시작했으며 다음으로 18.4%는 3학년때, 1학년때 시작한 학생은 17.5%, 2학년때는 15.2%를 차지했고 5학년과 6학년은 각각 13.4%와 12%를 기록했다.
Many cited *curiosity as the reason for smoking with 66 percent,
while 20.6 percent replied they were encouraged by *seniors or
friends. A total of 7.3 percent wanted to feel *mature through
smoking, and 5.2 percent thought it made them look ``cool.''

66%의 학생이 흡연의 이유로 호기심을 들었으며 20.6%는 상급생 및
친구의 권유를 이유로 들었다. 7.3%는 흡연을 통해 어른이 된 듯한 기분을 느껴보기 위해서라고 응답했으며 5.2%는 담배를 피우면 "멋지게"보일 것이라고 생각했다고 응답했다.
More than half of the students, or 50.5 percent replied they smoked their first cigarette at home, indicating that parents are failing to *adequately *supervise the *behavior of their children who attend elementary school.

절반이상인 50.5%의 학생들이 집에서 처음 담배를 피웠다고 응답해
부모들이 초등학교에 다니는 자녀들의 행동을 적절히 관리하지 못했음을 보여준다.
Among those who currently smoke, 47.8 percent replied they smoke
in their home or at a friend's house, 30.1 percent replied they smoke in alleys or streets, while 9.7 percent cited school bathrooms as a place to smoke.
현재도 흡연을 하고 있는 학생 가운데 47.8%는 집이나 친구집에서 담배를 피운다고 응답했으며 30.1%는 골목이나 거리에서, 9.7%는 학교 화장실에서 담배를 피운다고 답했다.
The majority of the students, or 88.7 percent, smoke one or two
cigarettes a day, but 4.9 percent smoke three to four cigarettes, with 6.4 percent smoking at least five cigarettes a day.
학생들 대다수인 88.7%는 하루에 한두개 정도 피운다고 답했지만 4.9%는 서너개, 6.4%는 적어도 하루에 5개피 이상 피운다고 응답했다.
Meanwhile, the rate of smoking was higher among students who
viewed school life as difficult or had *unstable family backgrounds.

한편, 흡연율은 학교 생활이 어려워 보이거나 불안정한 가족 배경을 갖고 있는 학생들 사이에 보다 높은 것으로 조사되었다.
