(Trip to Yeosu with Yeoni and Suni⋅6)

"여수에 'OTL'이란 없어요!"
"어떤 도전에도 당당하게 응전했거든요, 여수 사람들은."
("There is not 'OTL' any more in Yeosu"

▲ 좌절금지 ‘OTL’이라는 알파벳을 연결시키면 엎드려 울고 있는 사람처럼 보이죠? 그런데 그러면 안 된다고 붉게 사선이 그어져 있네요. 한마디로 ‘좌절 금지’. 이게 바로 여수 정신이에요. (Connect the alphabet 'OTL'. Doesn't it seems like the person lying face down with hands on the ground and crying? Diagonal line drawn in the picture, says "Don't do that". In short, it means 'No more Frustration'. This is the spirit of Yeosu.)

'OTL'이라는 이모티콘, 본 적이 있으세요? 요즘 인터넷에서 유행하는 이것은 'O'가 머리, 'T'가 팔과 몸통, 'L'이 다리가 되어서 무릎을 꿇고 좌절하고 있는 모습을 형상화한 거예요.
(Have you ever seen the emoticon 'OTL'? It is popular on the internet these days, and it embodies kneeling person frustrated: O' is head, 'T' is arms and back, and 'L' is legs knelt down.)

하지만 'OTL'이라는 말은 여수와 거리가 멀어요. 여수 사람들은 항상 어떠한 도전에도 좌절하지 않고 멋지게 응전하는 불굴의 정신을 보여 주었거든요. 이제부터 친구들에게 여수의 이런 모습을 소개해 드릴게요.
(But it is unfamiliar with Yeosu. People of Yeosu have shown an indomitable spirit, taking up any challenge greatly without any frustration. From now on, we introduce such character of Yeosu.)

▲ 고인돌 남한 최대 규모의 탁자식 고인돌인데, 우리 여수에 있어요. 길쭉한 고임돌로 기둥을 세우고 그 위에 넓적한 덮개돌을 얹었기 때문에 탁자같이 생겼다고 해서 탁자식 고인돌이라고 해요. (This is the biggest scale of table-shaped dolmen in South Korea, and it is in Yeosu. It seems like a table composed of a pillar built with a longish stone and a wide and flat covered stone put on the pillar. So, It is called table-shaped dolmen.)

깊은 밤, 아무도 없는 벌판이나 깊은 산중에 있어 본 적이 있으세요? 여기저기서 짐승 울음소리가 들리는 그런 원시를 느껴 본 적이 있으세요? 동물은 수천만 년 전의 모습 그대로 살고 있는데, 우리네 인간은 그 동물들과 달리 문화를 창조하며 살고 있지요. 그게 신기하지는 않으셨나요?
(At midnight, have you ever been in a field or among the hills where there is no one? Have you ever felt primitive times only to hear a cry of animals here and there? Unlike Animals which live a wild life just as they did like that of tens of millions of years ago, however, humans have lived creating culture. Isn't it surprising?)

선사시대에 인간은 여느 동물과 다를 바 없었어요. 하지만 자연에 순응해 버린 동물과 달리, 인간은 자연의 도전에 맞서 응전했지요. 인간이 거대한 자연에 맞서 좌절하지 않고 당당하게 헤쳐 나간 모습은 고인돌에서도 확인할 수 있어요. 인간이 무덤을 만들었다는 것은, 인간이 '보이는 세계 너머'를 보기 시작했다는 놀라운 사실을 알려 주잖아요.
(In prehistoric times, human didn't differ from any other animals. Unlike animals adapted themselves to nature, however, human took up a challenge against difficulties of nature. It can be checked over in the traces that human were not frustrated at all and overcame gallantly against nature. The fact that human made graves tells us that human began to see 'beyond the visible world'.)

자연의 도전에 대한 인간의 응전을 보여 주는 이 고인돌은, 여수시 율촌면 산수리에 가면 볼 수 있어요. 그것도 탁자식 고인돌로는 남한에서 가장 큰 것으로요. 자연의 도전에 당당하게 응전해 문화를 창조해 낸 여수의 고인돌을 보면, 2012여수세계박람회를 기대해도 좋다는 생각이 들 거예요.
(This dolmen to show off human taking up a challenge against adversities of nature can be seen in Sansu-ri, Yulchon-myeon, Yeosu. In addition, It is the biggest dolmen in South Korea, table-shaped dolmen of all. If you see dolmens of Yeosu create culture that overcame gallantly against nature's challenge, you will have an impression that you can look forward to Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea.)

▲ 거북선 세계에서 가장 오래된 철갑선인 ‘거북선’이에요. 거북의 등껍질처럼 갑판을 철갑으로 덮고 쇠못을 꽂아, 근접전에 강한 왜군에게도 밀리지 않았죠. 이 거북선을 보고 싶거든, 돌산대교 앞으로 오세요. (This is Geobukseon, a turtle-shaped ship which is the oldest iron armor ship in the world. Its deck was covered with iron armor and stuck into iron nail. So, it could fight against Japanese navies stronger than Korea's even in neighboring combat. If you want to see this ship, come to Dolsan Bridge.)

역사학자들이 그런대요. 한국이 그렇게 많은 외적의 침략을 받았으면서도 어떻게 나라를 유지할 수 있었는지, 신기하다고요. 정말이지 우리의 5천 년 역사는, 수백 아니 수천 번 외침이라는 참혹한 도전에 대한 끈질긴 응전의 역사였어요. 오늘은 그 상징물, 거북선으로 우리 친구들을 안내할까 해요.
(Every time historians think of Korea, they are surprised and wonder how Korean could be developed up to now despite a lot of invasions. In fact, our 5000 years history was endless challenges and responses through misery pillage. From now on, let me show you the symbol of challenge spirit, Geobukseon.)

1592년 일본이 우리나라를 침략했을 때, 조선이 승리할 수 있었던 것은 비밀 병기인 거북선이 한몫을 했대요. 거북선은 판옥선에 거북 모양의 머리와 꼬리를 단 함선이에요. 거북선을 처음 본 왜군들은 공포를 느꼈고, 머리에서 나오는 유황염초 연기에 혼란에 빠져 도망가기에 바빴대요.
(When Japan invaded our country in 1592, a primary factor that enabled Chosun to defeat Japan was Geobukseon, the undercover weapon of Chosun. It is the ship that is combination of Panokseon; Chosun's original worship with turtle shaped head and tail. Japanese invaders seeing Geobukseon first were frightened at the monstrous ship. Moreover, the clouds of smoke sent up by a head of turtle ship made enemies flight.)

그 거북선을 여수에서 여수 사람이 만들었고, 그 여수 사람들이 거북선을 타고 나라를 지켜낸 거지요. 그래서 여수에서 봄에 여는 축제 이름도 '거북선 축제'예요. 여수시에서는 지난해 11월에 이순신해양연구소에 의뢰하여 거북선 복원 건조 사업을 하고 있어요. 2012여수세계박람회 이전에는 원형에 가까운 거북선을 볼 수 있게 될 거래요. 기대되죠?
(Geobukseon was made by citizen of Yeosu, and they went on board the ship to attack enemies. So, Yeosu hold Geobukseon festival every spring. Also, Yeosu have steadily carried  out various projects to restore Geobukseon since last november. Maybe you can see the ship similar to genuine one before Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea. Do you flutter with a new hope?)

▲ 14연대 주둔지 표지판 여수 한국화약 공장 앞 바닷가에 세워진 표지판이에요. 여순사건의 시발지였던 14연대 주둔지임을 알리고 있지요. 남북 분단의 아픔을 어떻게 치유해야 할까요? (This signboard is located across from Hanhwa Corporation. It indicates an army post where Yeosu-Suncheon historical event's started as the 14 solidarity post. How do we heal a pain of the tragic division of the Korean peninsula?)

'여순사건'이라고 들어 보셨어요? 1948년 전라남도 여수에 주둔하고 있던 국방경비대 제14연대 군인들이 일으킨 사건이지요. 해방 정국의 소용돌이 속에서 좌익과 우익의 대립으로 빚어진 비극적인 사건이에요. 이 지역에서 양민을 포함해 죽은 사람만도 2500명이 넘는다니, 말해 무엇하겠어요.
(Have you ever heard 'Yeosu-Suncheon historical event'? This event brought about in Yeosu, Jeollanam-do by the 14 solidarity who were a national defense guard in Yeosu, Jeollanam-do. This tragic event occurred because of a conflict between leftist and rightist when we were liberated from Japan. Over 2500 people including innocent civilians died here.)

▲ 여순사건희생자위령비 오동도에서 여수역을 지나 마래터널을 통과해 보면 왼편에 여순사건희생자위령비가 있어요. 생각보다 작나요? 하지만 남북 화합을 바라는 마음은 그 어느 것보다 크답니다. (You can catch a sight of the Yeosu-Suncheon memorial, passing through the Marae tunnel to Yeosu station. Is it smaller than you expected? But our intention to live in harmony with North and South is greater than anything else.)

그래요. 우리나라는 아직도 남북으로 갈라져 갈등과 반목이 심각해요. 여전히 휴전선에는 전운이 감돌고 있고, 실제로 얼마 전만 해도 서해에서 남북 사이에 총격전이 벌어져 민간인까지 죽은 일이 일어났으니까요.
(Korea is still a divided country and maintains a state of tension. War clouds hang over the front line. Actually, we had a gunfight recently between North and South Korea in the Yellow sea. So, some of the innocent residents were killed then.)

하지만 여수 사람들은 남북 분단이라는 문제를 슬기롭게 풀어가고 있어요. 죽인 자와 죽은 자가 계속 갈등을 이어가면 어떻게 되겠어요? 그래서 이른바 좌익과 우익의 후손들이 서로를 용서하고 화해하는 위령비를 '함께' 세운 거예요. 이데올로기를 넘어서서 '형제로서' 서로를 껴안은 거지요. 이데올로기라는 참혹한 도전에 대한 여수 사람들의 응전, 멋지지 않아요?
(However, Yeosu wisely have solved korean problems. What If these conflict should continue between assaulter and sufferer?  So, people who is called descendants of leftist's and rightist's together established a cenotaph which means pardon and compromise. Beyond an ideology, we brotherly embraced another. This is Yeosu's response, confronted the challenge about ideology. What a nice it is!)

▲ 사일로 20세기 산업 사회를 상징적으로 보여주는 시멘트 사일로에요. 보기 싫다고 철거하자고도 했는데, 이것을 살리기로 했어요. 멋진 엑스포의 상징물로. (It is a silo that stands for 20C industrial society. Someone wanted to remove it, because of bad scene. But we saved this as a wonderful symbol of Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea.)

여수 엑스포의 상징물을 만들자고 했을 때, 새로 만들자는 의견이 많았대요. 그런데 우리는 20세기 산업 사회의 흉물스러운 시설인 사일로를 21세기의 친환경적 상징물로 거듭나게 하기로 했어요. 시멘트 저장고에 불과했던 사일로를 스카이타워로 새로 만들기로 한 거죠.
(They held a debate on a symbol of Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea to make, most of opinions is to build a new symbol. However, the silo which is one of disgusting facilities in 20C industrial society was reborn into eco-friendly symbol. The silo nothing but cement store will come to a life again as a Sky Tower.)

스카이타워의 한 기둥에서는 바다의 과거를 스토리텔링 형태로 재현하고 있고, 또 다른 기둥에서는 밝고 아름다운 미래를 보여 주고 있어요. 특히 환경오염으로 인해 물이 부족해질 것을 대비하는 해수 담수화 시설을 갖추어 여수엑스포의 정신도 담아낼 거고요.
(On one of Sky Tower pillars, it reappears past of sea as a form of storytelling and shows delight future of sea on another. Especially, we put into the sprit of Yeosu Expo by preparing for the desalination of seawater to be ready for lack of water due to environmental pollution.)

여수엑스포조직위원회 손동월 님은 "무분별한 개발만이 존재했던 산업 시대의 유산인 사일로를 새로운 용도로 재생함으로써, 스카이타워는 2012여수세계박람회 주제를 구현하면서 녹색 성장에 화답하는 모범 사례로 박람회 역사에 길이 남을 것"이라고 했어요. 스카이타워는 1889년 파리 박람회를 상징하는 에펠탑만큼 크진 않지만 자연과 공존하려 노력하는 여수 엑스포의 정신을 고스란히 담아내고 있는 멋진 상징물로 세계인의 가슴에 남았으면 좋겠어요.
(Son Dongwol, a member of organizing committee for Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea said, "There was only an indiscriminate development in the industrial era. And the silo which is only a legacy of the industrial era was reborn as a new use, Sky Tower. So, it will embody theme of the Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea and go down in history of fair as best practices that are echoed in the green growth." Sky Tower isn't as big as Eiffel Tower which symbolizes Expo 1889 Paris France. But we want it to go to your heart as a splendid symbol which contains the mind of Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea trying to live together with nature.)

여수는 항구예요. 그러다 보니 등대가 여러 군데 있지요. 어두운 바다에서 배가 나아갈 길을 비춰주는 게 등대 본래의 역할이죠. 그런데 여수는 그런 등대를 하나 더 짓고 있어요. 어디에요? 바로 세계인의 가슴에요! 그 등대가 바로 '여수 선언'이랍니다.
(Yeosu is the harbor city. So there are lighthouses at several places. Their original function is to lighten the direction of ship in the darkness. However, Yeosu is building another one like that. Where? Exactly in the hearts of citizens of the world! That is just 'The Yeosu Declaration'.)

이번 2012여수세계박람회를 계기로, 전 세계를 향해 '살아있는 바다, 숨쉬는 연안'이라는 주제로 우리 인류가 처한 위기를 함께 해결하자는 호소가 여수 선언에 담길 거래요. 죽어가는 바다를 살아 있는 바다로 만들고, 숨을 헐떡거리는 연안을 다시 숨 쉬게 하자는 여수 선언은, 여수 엑스포가 밝히는 새로운 등대가 될 거예요.
(With this Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea as a turning point, the declaration of Yeosu will carry an appeal to participation of citizens in pursuing marine cooperation and solving our facing crisis together with the theme of 'The Living Ocean and Coast'. 'The Yeosu Declaration' to make the dying ocean alive again and the coast more lively than ever before will be a new lighthouse where the Yeosu Expo will brighten the future.)

하지만 이러한 도전이 성공하려면 꼭 있어야 하는 게 있어요. 바로 이 포스터 속의 소년이에요! 이 소년이 물고기로봇과 손을 맞대고 있는 모습이 보이죠? 저 손짓은 단순하게 물고기와 친해지려고 저러는 게 아니에요. 죽어가는 바다를 작은 노력으로라도 살아 숨 쉬도록 바꾸려는 손짓이거든요.
(But there is one thing needed to take up such challenges. It's very the boy in the poster!  You can see the scene where fingers of him and fish meet. This gesture not only means intimacy of them but also a little effort to make dying ocean alive.)

그런 능력을 가진 저 소년을 우리는 알고 있어요. 그게 누구냐고요? 바로 '우리'죠! 아니, 죽어가는 바다를 살리려고 함께하는 세계의 젊은이들 모두가 바로 '우리'가 될 수 있어요.
(We do know the boy who has an ability to do it. Who is he? It's 'us'! All the youth trying to make 'The Living Ocean' can be 'us'.)
